Electric Bird Noise CD Release Party at Freshbrewed Coffee House - Myrtle Beach, SC - 02/22/13
Friday night BJM and I hoofed it down south to get loud with Brian McKenzie, aka Electric Bird Noise for the release of his new album Desert Jelly, (which, btw is pretty awesome. think gothed out Twin Shadow or New Order), and make messes. Brian performed as Small Life Form and did some weird things on the floor.
he is playing music, seriously.

BLM, aka Electric Bird Noise, had a pretty pro setup. It wasn't until the show the next night when I really figured out what was going on... lots of sneaky footwork and stuff. Here is a pretty in-depth and excellent interview with Brian re: the album, etc. Once again, I marvel, Myrtle Beach has a music scene?

After the show we went to some bar which miraculously had all the people that were at the coffee shop there. We got sloshed and then I wound up singing Where the Streets Have No Name karaoke with a live band. (Of course) Excellent. We went home and Brian McKenzie made the most excellent popcorn I have ever eaten in my life, as evident by the fact that it was literally all over me and in my hair when I woke up the next day.

Here is another article about the show.

Squidco Monthly Experimental Series Presents - Wilmington - 02/23/13

the Brians release the Kraken pre-show with Phil Zampino and JM, owners of Squido

Squidco is a beautiful and immaculate independently owned record store in (in my opinion) the other side of nowhere, Wilmington. (But, you know, never having lived in Wilmington or spent more than a day or two at a time there, it might be a hotspot, what do I know?) Squidco specializes in the "other side" of music; improvisational Jazz, edm, world, eclectic, drone, avant-garde... aka everything Brian John Mitchell. As well as a beautiful retail setup, Squidco also has a perfect performance space and has a monthly series highlighting some of the best of the least known.
Austin Glover (& Judson)

First in the lineup was (as I understand it) a relative new-comer to the Wilmington scene; Austin Glover. What you would expect if you knew what to expect, which I didn't, so this was unexpected as hell. He started his set with a mind-boggling and ear-humbling Tuvan Throat singing set. If you don't know what this is, I don't know what to tell you. Get thee to YouTube. He also played saxophone, fiddle, ummm.... I don’t know what else... guitar? Spoons? I may be making things up, here. Final result: I liked this a lot. I was surprised!!
Hey look! worst picture ever! sorry guys :(
Next up was Cheval Gris (grey horse? hey.) aka Ryan Lewis and friends, from Wilmington. Before he got started  BJM handed me his earplugs and said "he tends to play more Caustic sounding stuff" which he explained to be as "Clang Quartet-ish" and yeah; started out with lots of feedback-y and screechy noises but then mellowed out to something quite ethereal and relaxing. Pretty cool.
Flyer for the show in the window ... AHHH GTFO

BJM aka small life form riding the train and then I snapped a pic that was all Jacob's Ladder... Yikes!

Brianses
Grand Finale from Electric Bird Noise
The show ended with My Brian next and then Brian McKenzie following; I'm not sure if it was the excellent pre-show dinner we had, the chill vibe or what, but both boys had a much more relaxing and enjoyable show from an audience vantage point. Much less mystery involved because it was easier to see, but they sounded really good and my pride-o-meter was off the charts!

We ended the weekend dozing the day away in Oak Island and wandering back into town on Sunday evening.

Overall weekend score tally:
+10 for simply being a weekend
+25 for it being my last weekend as a fully employed person and feeling really excited about future possibilities
-30 for it being my last weekend as a fully employed person and being scared shitless
+40 for my dude being incredibly loving and supportive
+25 for good friends and hospitality (thank you Brian & Chrissy)
-15 for nearly debilitating hangover Saturday
+20 for excellent music from people I love
+15 for new friends in the Myrtle Beach scene
+10 for probably some of the best sushi I’ve ever had (at Nikki's in Wilmington)
-------------
100 total for my weekend - PERFECT SCORE~!!!@11

Looking ahead this week:

Unfortunately, not a lot. I am going to be focusing on closing out my 8 year employment and trying not to get too freaked out. I'll update as I find things (hope you guys are enjoying/appreciating the Just Announced posts!) and will be sure to update with here or Twitter with my happenings until I have more to share.

Wednesday night is the monthly 919noise showcase at the Nightlight in Chapel Hill; up this time is Clang Quartet, Slicnaton, and Mecanikill. Doors at 9:30.

The next thing on my calendar isn't until next Thursday; Major Lazer atCat's Cradle - woooord uuuuup!
Here is a video of what happened the last time I saw Major lazer at Cat's cradle in 2010:
Expectations is high, y'all - Carrboro better bring that shit!
